You've Tackled the Wheat—Now Weed Out the Next Threat

Jul 04, 2025

By Mark Vance, GCC Sales Agronomist

As I write this, wheat harvest is underway—and once that’s wrapped up, it marks the first step toward preparing for the next crop.

With recent rains across the area, weeds will be emerging quickly in fields. A timely burndown application is critical—small weeds are much easier to control than large ones, especially when it comes to Palmer pigweed.

Also, as wheat matures and harvest progresses, be sure to keep a close eye on your row crop fields, particularly corn. Spider mites will begin migrating from wheat into those crops. An early application of miticide—while mite colonies are still small—is far more effective than trying to rescue the crop after populations have exploded and moved up into the canopy.
